The ranks of the Great African Five include five of the most important and also most dangerous animals of this sun-warmed continent. Here is the second coin in the series, which presents the faces of these remarkable creatures with due class.

A wild cat engraved in solid gold

After the elephant depicted on the first piece in the collection, it’s the turn of the one referred to as the king of the jungle and all animals – the lion. The combination of fine gold with the image of a deadly, yet poised animal has produced a fascinating effect. The obverse depicts the head of the predatory cat along with a detailed reproduction of its characteristic mane. The reverse, meanwhile, features the two halves of the face of this menacing creature, presented from the front.

On the front of the one-ounce gold coin there is also room for the South African coat of arms and the inscriptions – South Africa and the Big Five 2019. Designations such as the face value, the number of ounces and the bullion sample are located in a circle engraved in the central part of the reverse.
