The life of Witold Pilecki is a relentless example of heroic demeanour and fighting for independence, regardless of the danger. Deeds, which we associate with a Hollywood crime film script, but not with reality, certainly deserve the highest respect. We are lucky that the Mint of Poland decided to emit a silver coin with the Polish hero depicted on it.
Life as a fight for freedom
It is hard to compare Witold Pilecki with any other historical figure. Cavalry Captain in Polish-Soviet War, fighter in the September Campaign of 1939, founder of the secret organization. He allowed Germans catch him and send to the concentration camp in Auschwitz. There he organized resistance movement, reviewed the situation, which was completely unknown outside the camp and escaped Auschwitz to publish a report about this horrible place. After the war he was also involved in actions to regain independence. He was arrested by the communists in power and sentenced to death in a show trial in 1948.
Exactly his depiction is on the 10-zlotys coin from the Mint of Poland from 2017. Its weight is 14,14 grams and diameter is 32 millimeters. It is made of silver of 925 fineness, which resulted in a very elegant effect, especially when proof seal added.
The mintage is only 15 000 units. It is worth to purchase such coin, when it’s price is still low, because its value will constantly rise. We include certificate of authenticity and a special commemorative box.
