The reverse of this pure silver piece includes the creature dominant in many Maorilegends, that is the taniwha. According to Maori mythology, taniwha lived in deep pools in rivers, dark caves or in the sea. They especially liked dangerous places playing the role of protective guardians. However, in some legends they are also shown as predatory being capable of kidnap women to have as wives. The creature has been captured while underwater. In its most popular representation it is shown as a whale or a quite large shark. On the reverse, the other representation is depicted – this is a dragon with a long, snake-like body. Above the image, there is the inscription “Tekau Tara”, below it – the legal tender value of the coin (10 dollars).
