The reverse of the coin shows Hei Matau – an amazing piece of Māori history and culture. Hei Matau is a bone or greenstone carving in the shape of highly stylized fish hook typical of the Māori people of New Zealand. It represents strength, good luck and safe travel across water. The symbol of Hei Matau is followed by a piece of pounamu, located in the right part of the coin. It has symbolic notches on the edge.
The obverse indicates the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, date 2012 and issuing country – New Zealand. Each coin is presented within black and red leatherette box which contains also a Certificate of Authenticity.
