It is the maple leaf that brings the first, obvious association with Canadian coins. What’s fascinating is that although the Royal Canadian Mint has been minting them for many years, it still finds ways to reinterpret this classic and (seemingly) repetitive motif.
Black coin with maple leaf
A single ounce of pure silver was used to strike this coin, although what is most impressive is the fact that the itself is…..black. This marks the first time since 1988 that the Silver Maple Leaf, or the popular SML, has been decorated in this way.
While the double incuse effect was made possible by a modern approach to coin minting technique, it is essentially a traditional, valuable collector’s numismatic piece. In addition with the limited mintage (5,000 copies) – you know it’s not worth delaying. This coin, dated 2020, immediately attracted the interest of collectors around the world, especially since the renowned Royal Canadian Mint hardly needs a special mention.
