2016 4-COIN SET 20 YEARS IN THE MINTING
When in 1996 the first mintage of “toonies” went into circulation, it replaced the Canadian two-dollar paper banknote. Now it is high time to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the “toonies” with this special four-coin premium set of gold and platinum coins.
The collection includes four coins. Coin 1 on the top-left is a 99.95% pure platinum coin with selective gold plating. Coin 1 on the top right is made of 99.99% pure gold. Both of them were designed by Susanna Blunt in 1993. Coin 3 on the bottom left is a 99.95 platinum, whereas coin 4 on the bottom right – 99.99% pure gold. These two coins were designed by Dora de Pédery-Hunt in 1990.
The reverse and obverse of coin 1 includes the design of today`s two-dollar coin. The inner rings of the obverse and reverse are gold-plated. The obverse shows the present effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
The reverse of coin 2 shows an image of the original polar bear from the 1996 issue with the bear sitting in the center. The obverse shows the he present effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
The reverse of coin 3 shows the number 2 and the building of the Canadian Parliament from the Canadian two-dollar banknote. Also scrollwork and geometric lines are captured from the banknote. The obverse includes the 1996 effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Dora de Pédery-Hunt.
The reverse of coin 4 shows a detailed vignette depicting two robins (Turdus migratorius) taken from the Canadian two-dollar banknote issue. Also scrollwork and geometric lines are captured from the banknote. The obverse features the 1996 effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Dora de Pédery-Hunt.
The unique set of collector’s coins has been minted to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the “toonies”. That is why all the coins are delivered in a wood case with a graphic beauty box, including the label of the Royal Canadian Mint.
