In Canada`s far-northern latitudes nature takes center stage with a beautiful light show. With the innovative glow-in-the-dark technology, the qualities of aurora borealis are recreated on the coin which captures the look and feel of the nights in the Canada`s Arctic region.
The reverse image designed by Canadian artist Julius Csotonyi brings rich colors and detailed engraving to recreate the beauty of winter night in Nunavut’s Auyuittuq National Park. It shows two Baffin Island wolves (Canislupus manningi) standing on the cliff of Thor Peak where they release their howl into the crisp air. Aurora borealis arches overhead, bridging the peaks and the wolves.
The full effect of the coin can be seen in the dark after placing it in a light source for 30 to 60 seconds. Then it enhances the quality of aurora borealis by adding an intensity of green, yellow, pink and orange hues to the soft glow of a moonlit night on the landscape covered with snow.
The obverse features the word CANADA, the face value of 30 dollars and the date of 2016. It includes the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
