For the first time in the modern history of British numismatics there is an opportunity to own a modern coin featuring the image of George III. In the Coins From World stock there is a coin containing 1 ounce of gold – issued in only 125 copies. What is worth knowing about it?
George III has been featured on a modern coin for the first time
Only Elizabeth II and Victoria reigned longer on the British throne than George III of Hanover. The issue of the coin in 2020 was connected with the 200th anniversary of the monarch’s death (he lived from 1738 to 1820). Speaking with historical precision, he was the first king of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland (and at the same time the first king of Hanover or of the ephemeral Anglo-Corsican Kingdom, which survived in this formula for only 2 years). It was during his reign that Britain lost its American colonies, although the monarch himself was highly regarded by his subjects. His long reign was unfortunately weakened by a severe, worsening illness.
The designers – Jody Clark and Dominique Evans – decided to make an extremely traditional, stylish coin. The Evans reverse design incorporates the image of George III and the buildings and motifs associated with him (the king loved country life and tended his own crops). Due to the theme, the limited mintage and the gold content, this is a collector’s numismatic coin with a significant and growing value.
Special features of the coin:
