The gold Sovereign is one of the most famous coins in history – a true “classic” of the British Royal Mint. So why did the masters of the Royal Canadian Mint decide to take on its anniversary version? Learn more about the unique history of the coin, which is worth investing in now.
Sovereign after 110 years equally spectacular
Let’s go back to 1908, when a branch of the British Royal Mint opened in Ottawa. The Canadians had plenty of gold at the time (after the famous 19th century “Fever”), but lacked the experience and infrastructure to produce valuable, top quality numismats. That is why they decided to work with the Royal Mint and mint Sovereigns, known and internationally approved. Relatively few of them were minted, but the most important fact in this story is… the beginning of the glorious history of the Canadian Mint, now independent and respected for its outstanding quality.
The 2018 Sovereign contains an ounce of gold of 99.999% purity. Only 500 copies were minted, which are notable for at least having an obverse with the image of Edward VII – not Elizabeth II. Will there be room in your collection for such a unique anniversary numismat?
